SMA BOARD OF DIREC TORS
Report
Y
our SMA Board of Directors has been working on
many fronts. Following are some of the key activities over the past few months:
CEO search
The Board of Directors has initiated a search for a new CEO
for the SMA. A search committee is being formed and the
job description is being reviewed. Following this, the opportunity will be publicized on the SMA website and publications as well as external websites and publications.
Chair of the Board
The Board has extended an offer for the Chair of the Board.
This position will work closely with the CEO and Board Executive in setting the agenda for Board meetings as well as
run the Board meetings. The Chair will also be involved in
the Representative Assembly (RA), ensuring that the directives of the RA are carried out and communicating activities
of the Board to the RA.
Pharmacist’s prescriptive authority
As the prescriptive authority of pharmacists continues to
expand, the Board of Directors has maintained communication with the Ministry of Health and the Saskatchewan College of Pharmacists to express our reservations, as this has
the potential to impact patient safety. A meeting between
the Executives of the SMA Board of Directors and the Board
of Directors of the Saskatchewan College of Pharmacists is
scheduled for this spring.

SMA to contact the Ministry of Health to address physicians

delink call requirements, and take into account the ratio of
long-term beds per physician in any community.
Expanding role of nurses and nurse practitioners
The SMA was asked by the Ministry of Health to give
thoughts on a proposed amendment to Section 55.1 of the
Hospital Standards Regulations that would see the expansion of nurse practitioner scopes of practice to include preoperative assessments. A letter outlining several concerns
