your SMA YOUR SMA SMA BOARD OF DIREC TORS Report Y our SMA Board of Directors has been working on many fronts. Following are some of the key activities over the past few months: CEO search The Board of Directors has initiated a search for a new CEO for the SMA. A search committee is being formed and the job description is being reviewed. Following this, the opportunity will be publicized on the SMA website and publications as well as external websites and publications. Chair of the Board The Board has extended an offer for the Chair of the Board. This position will work closely with the CEO and Board Executive in setting the agenda for Board meetings as well as run the Board meetings. The Chair will also be involved in the Representative Assembly (RA), ensuring that the directives of the RA are carried out and communicating activities of the Board to the RA. Pharmacist’s prescriptive authority As the prescriptive authority of pharmacists continues to expand, the Board of Directors has maintained communication with the Ministry of Health and the Saskatchewan College of Pharmacists to express our reservations, as this has the potential to impact patient safety. A meeting between the Executives of the SMA Board of Directors and the Board of Directors of the Saskatchewan College of Pharmacists is scheduled for this spring. 6 SMA NEWS DIGEST | SPRING 2014 Family Physician Comprehensive Care Program (FPCCP) The tripartite SMA/Ministry of Health/RHA Family Physician Comprehensive Care Committee is continuing to review and make improvements to the Family Physician Comprehensive Care Program (FPCCP). The Committee will continue to review the FPCCP and provide advice on program parameters that support best practice guidelines and comprehensive care for patients. The Board has directed the SMA to contact the Ministry of Health to address physicians concerns about the FPCCP, specifically that the future Comprehensive Care agreement should delink the rurality index, delink call requirements, and take into account the ratio of long-term beds per physician in any community. Expanding role of nurses and nurse practitioners The SMA was asked by the Ministry of Health to give thoughts on a proposed amendment to Section 55.1 of the Hospital Standards Regulations that would see the expansion of nurse practitioner scopes of practice to include preoperative assessments. A letter outlining several concerns and indicating the SMA is unable to support this amendment as proposed was sent to the Ministry on March 4, 2014. FP Section The Board Executive has met with the Section of Family Practice Executive. The Board intends to keep frequent meetings with the FP Section in order to keep the
