THE MINI LADYCATS AIM TO ACHIEVE HIGHER
BY PILAR PASCUAL
Basketball, one of the most popular sports among
teenagers, has had a big influence on students at
Shanghai Livingston American School (SLAS).
Basketball is considered a game of tactics and
teamwork; it is also a great way to connect and meet
with new people. At SLAS, the middle school girls
basketball team is preparing to give their best during
the season and continue the legacy that the High
School girls basketball team started.
Laura Pascual, a seventh grader and the captain of the
“Mini Ladycats”, said in an interview, “I am very
committed to this team. I would not be able to play
without them, and I am looking forward to seeing what
the team is up for.” Laura is very excited to have such
an amazing team. She also said, “ Our goal for this
season is to do our best and try to win, but, most
importantly, it is also to have fun and enjoy playing
with each other.”
Basketball is a very interesting sport. With five different
positions – point guard, shooting guard, small forward,
power forward, and center –, multiple tactics and plays,
basketball is what you could call “the game of smart
people”. Ever since the 1980s, basketball among
women has not only been a game, but a lifestyle as
well. At SLAS, sports have not been very popular
amongst most female students. However, ever since
the high school girls basketball team went undefeated
in the 2014-2015 season, the spirit of the game has
taken over the hearts of many girls. This year, the high
school girls team had a huge turning point in SLAS’s
basketball legacy, when they won the West Conference
and got 4th place at the tournament. The “Mini
Ladycats” are inspired by their amazing teamwork and
happiness, and it makes them want to achieve more
and fill in more to the Ladycats Basketball legacy.
This year’s team coaches are Mr. Javier Pascual and Mr.
Alberto Martinez. “Basketball is a very healthy way to
do sports, meet new people, and spend free time all at
the same time,” said Mr. Javier in an interview. Mr. Javier
is also looking forward to the season and what the team
has to show. “We are trying to build a good team where
everyone can feel welcomed and respected. It is not all
about winning because, what is the point of winning if
there isn’t a good team spirit between the girls?” he
said when he was asked for his goals this season.
Ever since a long time ago, basketball has been more
than just a game. Women have had the chance, for years
now, of playing a beautiful sport. The middle school
girls basketball team, along with coaches Alberto and
Javier, will try their best to win and enjoy this season as
much as they can. The SLAS community wishes them
good luck as the Mini Ladycats aim to achieve higher
and continue to leave behind an important legacy.
