SLAS Times 2016/2017 Fall 2016 | Page 7

Hello Friends, Classmates and Countrymen! We warmly welcome you to the Fall 2016 edition of our schools publication, the SLAS Times. This is a creative project put together by the hardworking students in the Journalism classes at Shanghai Livingston American School and reflects their hard work throughout the 1st semester. We are very honored as well as proud to finally see our work printed and distributed for all to see. This publication has been a tremendous amount of work yet it is just as rewarding, students had to learn the basics of journalism as well as go through an extensive editing process. The articles you are about to enjoy reflect our students interests, traditions, culture, trends and events. We hope you enjoy reading each and every page of the SLAS Times! In his second year with our class, Jin Hyuk Choi has hit the ground running with his article about new teachers at our school. In this article, Jin Hyuk interviews 2 teachers about why they decided to become teachers and what we can do to be better students. Shanghai often seems like a city with too much going on but Mikaela breaks down some of her favorite places to visit when she goes out with her friends. She thoughtfully lets you know what to expect as well as outlines prices. Social media and dining out have merge to a point where people don’t start eating until they have taken a picture of their food! Anna Kim understands how this works as she gives us a fun list of places you should visit, take a photo and then post to your Wechat or Tumblr accounts! Soo Yeon Nam decided to look into one of the most popular classes at SLAS, the dance class! In her article, she writes about the popular dance styles and even interviews Mr. Yao to get his opinion on why dance is one of the most sought after classes. In what is now a Fall tradition, SLAS put on its 3rd annual Back to School Bash. Having attended all 3 versions, Pilar Pascual decided to write about it for this issue of the Times. Pilar did a fantastic job of balancing opinions and spinning an overall positive tone to the event. Using cell phones in the classroom is frowned upon by our administration, but there is very sound reasoning on why we have such policy. Emma Wootan delves into our schools technology policy and comes away with an interesting and refreshing article. Dana Collins was once a new student at SLAS not so long ago and is now a well-known and liked student. In her article, Dana looks into the positives and negatives of being a new student and what we can do as a community to help them feel comfortable. We probably speak with our friends more via social media than we do face to face. In this soon to be classic piece, Jin Young wants to answer the question, “If I send you a message on Wechat and no one is there to receive it, does it make your phone beep?” Serious stuff! Taro Ikeda tackles the issue that plagues many of our students, ‘what do I do when I am bored?” In his segment, Taro research many popular hobbies and interests and then talks with students to find out how they spend their free time. If you struggle with this, it’s a must read! The B2SB has developed into one of the best events for the SLAS community and certainly one of the things that make this event so memorable is the performances. Jonason Zhang, a performer and musician himself, outlines the performances from the most recent B2SB. Every school year brings new fresh students to campus. However, Cathryn Jiang would like for us to also acknowledge the new teachers who come to add to the diversity of our school community. Thank you Cathryn! Recently, the Student Council held a beauty contest to raise money for future events. In a unique twist, the losers had to, uh, drastically alter the length of their hair. If you wanna know exactly what happened, check out the image of Jerry on page 21! James Ma wants to know if having technology in the classroom actually benefits student learning. In his article, James does a fantastic job of outlining the pros and cons and does not blindly follow the siren song of the latest technological gizmo! Ashim Sapkota has become our resident “Top 10” expert, having last year written some very well received articles. This time around, Ashim comes back with another list, but this time restaurant recommendations and opinions from the very people who have been there. Let’s see what makes his list! 7
