NEW STUDENT GOVERNMENT AT SLAS BY ASHIM SAPTOKA In a country, a government helps their people’s voice to be heard but in a school it is the student council. It is a very interesting organization dedicated to organizing events and keeping the students voice heard. Shanghai Livingston American School (SLAS) has now elected its own student council and now depends on them to help there students have a better life at school. represent their voice. At SLAS the winners for president and vice president were Jae Park and Annie Liu. Their competitors fought valiantly but in the end Jae and Annie were the last ones standing.Resulted in them leading students speaking for them, and also organizing fun events for them. Events include haunted houses, booths for lunch sales, and dances such as prom. Jae Park, the newly elected student council president said, “I want students to enjoy their school through better food, we will have more variety of snacks. Also I want the students voice to be hear.” Newly elected vice president Annie Liu said, “I will listen to students ideas of changes and take action on perusing them.” As we all know changes takes time so we should give our new leaders the benefit of the doubt and exercise patience. The election process is very intriguing. It started with a single announcement and a sign up sheet for potential candidatesto register for the election. Then came days of preparation forspeeches. After that it was time to show their hard work through speeches, slogans, and a campaign. This will tell the students the reasons that they should vote for them. Candidates make promises and commitments that they will implement to make school life better. Next students elect their leaders and their speakers to Student council is one of the most responsible organizations at most schools around the world. To participate in this organization and to lead this organization takes great commitment and confidence. Therefore student council is an organization by the students and for the students. 13
