ost of us don’t have completely perfect
skin, relying instead on foundation to
create a flawless and even complexion.
But with so many options to choose from, how
do you go about finding the right shade, finish
and coverage for your skin? With the help of
make-up artist and cosmetics creator Susan
Posnick, here’s how to ace your base.
50 SHADES OF BEIGE
The main problem most women have when it
comes to foundation is wearing the wrong
shade. To find your perfect match, you need to
get real about your skin tone. We can all re-
member that group of girls at school whose
face was noticeably darker than their neck.
Susan Posnick, make-up artist and founder of
global mineral cosmetics company Susan
Posnick Cosmetics, believes this is one of the
most common ways women get their base
wrong, “Women always seem to want to choose
a darker foundation shade, but this change in
colour looks obvious. You are better off using
a bronzer to warm up the skin rather than using
your foundation.”
To avoid looking like you are wearing a mask,
work out what your skin’s main undertone is.
Most people will either have cool, warm or
neutral undertones in their skin, and it’s these
you need to look out for when shopping for
foundation. Cool skin tones tend to have a lot
of pink in their complexion, warm skin tones
have peachy or yellow undertones, and neutral
skin tones have a mix of both. Using a foun-
dation with similar undertones to your own will
ensure you end up with the most perfect match.
After being diagnosed with skin cancer on her
face in 2000, Susan decided to create her very
own foundation that provided healthy coverage
in a variety of shades, ranging from a neutral
porcelain to a rich, dark chocolate. Her
COLORFLO foundation is made with all
natural ingredients and is incredibly versatile:
“Most women can wear more than one shade
of our COLORFLO foundation, as the colour
adapts to the skin, making it easier for women
to choose the correct shade,” explains Susan.
Once you have narrowed it down to your top
picks, try the shortlist on your skin to find your
winner. “When it comes to choosing the right
shade, always place the foundation along the
lower cheek and jawbone to be sure that it
matches your neck,” says Susan, and try to look
at your skin in natural light, if possible, to
confirm the match.
