DriverFocus Snags a Major Award
This past February, at the Canadian
International Auto Show in Toronto,
the Subaru DriverFocus Distraction
Mitigation System was named the “Best
Safety Innovation” for 2019 by the
Automobile Journalists Association of
Canada (AJAC).
First introduced on the all-new 2019
Subaru Forester, this segment-exclusive
system utilizes a camera angled at the
driver and facial recognition software to
identify signs of fatigue or distraction.
If this is the case, DriverFocus triggers
visual and auditory alerts to help bring
driver attention back to the road ahead.

CEO of Subaru Canada, Inc. accepting the
AJAC “Best Safety Innovation” for 2019
“As our brand continues to grow and evolve to meet
the needs of customers, our commitment to safety is second
to none,” said Yasushi Enami, chairman, president and CEO
of Subaru Canada, Inc. “This award from AJAC is a wonderful
tribute to Subaru’s core values as we prioritize the safety of
not just Subaru drivers, but the safety of all.”
AJAC introduced its “Best New
Technology” award in 1998 and has
since gone on to honour a diverse range
of innovations, including engines,
hybrid systems, infotainment systems,
seat belts, collision warning systems
and rearview cameras. In 2014, the
organization divided the award into
two separate categories: “Best New
Technology—Innovation” and “Best
New Technology—Safety.” In 2018, the
award names were changed to “Best
Technology Innovation” and “Best
Safety Innovation.”
The all-new 2020 Subaru Legacy and
2020 Subaru Outback, which arrive later
this year, will be the next vehicles to be made available with
the Subaru DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System.
The Best Mainstream Brand in Canada – Again!
For an unprecedented fifth consecutive year, Subaru has been named the Best Mainstream
Brand in the ALG Canadian Residual Value Awards. This award reflects a continued focus on
giving Canadians a range of desirable vehicles that are priced competitively, engineered to last
and built to hold their value.
“At Subaru, our aim is to deliver more than just great vehicles to our customers but also great
value,” said Subaru Canada chairman, president and CEO Yasushi Enami. “Awards like these
prove just that, and I am extremely happy to pass this value on to current and future Subaru
owners.”
In addition to being named the top mainstream brand, four different Subaru vehicles were
also recognized by ALG in their respective segments.
The Subaru Impreza earned the Best Compact Car title for the third consecutive time and the
ninth time over the last 10 years. In the Best Sports Car category, the dynamic Subaru WRX and
WRX STI duo claimed the title for the fourth consecutive year and the eighth time in total.
For the ninth consecutive year, the Subaru Outback won its category, the Best Mid-Size
Utility—2-Row, and the Subaru Crosstrek snagged the Best Subcompact Utility award for the
fourth year in a row.
Presented by the industry benchmark for projecting future residual values and depreciation
data, the annual ALG Canadian Residual Value Awards recognize mainstream brands and
vehicles that are predicted to retain the highest percentage of their original price after four
years on the road.
