SUBARU 360 °
That ’ s a Shrink Wrap !
When the typical Subaru fan reaches out through social media , the team at @ SubaruCanada is quick to respond . More often than not , it ’ s a Subaru owner with a great photo or video clip , taken while participating in some kind of cool Canadian adventure : camping , kayaking , mountain biking , mountain climbing … you get the picture .
But earlier this year , as teachers and students across the country wrestled with different ways of instruction outside the classroom , the social media team received the following note from Landmark East School in Wolfville , Nova Scotia . “ Here ’ s one more photo from our students ’ ‘ Constructed Landscapes ’ series , where they photographed everyday objects from perspectives meant to play tricks on your eyes . This one by Hudson in Grade 10 looks like it ’ s straight out of a magazine ! What do you think @ SubaruCanada ?”
The social media team agreed , we agreed and here we are — shining a spotlight on the unique vision of a young photographer who also happens to be a Subaru fanatic . We had the chance to conduct a socially very distant interview with Hudson Hancock to find out what inspired the photographs you see here . Please tell our readers a bit about yourself . My name is Hudson Hancock , I ’ m 16 years old and I ’ m from Coldbrook , Nova Scotia . What are your interests , aside from photography ? Scootering , JDM cars , skateboarding , cliff jumping , biking , hiking and playing Forza . What are your future goals ? I would like to own a scooter shop and do car photography . Could you tell us about your school assignment , “ Constructed Landscapes ”— what were you asked to do originally ? The assignment was created during the COVID-19 shutdown , when the schools closed . Our school was doing online classes via Zoom and the purpose [ of the

assignment ] was to create art using items that we had access to at home . I was supposed to take a photo in a way to trick the eye into thinking that something small was actually fullsized . I wanted to take a photo of an off-road scene , and originally wanted to use a truck , but I couldn ’ t find one . So I chose to use the Outback because Subaru has rally heritage . When Subaru Canada saw your photograph , they asked you to take more shots of model cars . What was your reaction ? I was like , “ What the heck ?” because I was surprised that Subaru actually saw the photo . I was also surprised that just one photo for an assignment would get the attention of such a big company . How did you come up with the idea for each photo ? I walked around my yard with each car and looked for locations that worked . I used cars with more ground clearance for rougher terrain , and cars with less ground clearance for smooth terrain . I also looked at Subaru car photos and used them as inspiration . What are you calling this body of work ? “ Little Big Shots !” When did you first become interested in Subaru cars ? My uncle used to own a Subaru , but my family does not have one right now . I like the Outback , but my favourite is the 1990 Subaru Impreza WRX STI . What will you be photographing next ? I ’ d like to go to car shows and take photos of full-sized cars . I also like to take scooter videos and edit them .
The school that Hudson attends , Landmark East School , is the only day and boarding school in the country dedicated to students with learning differences . For the past 40 years , the staff at this facility have focused on ensuring students realize their full potential and leverage these strengths to create a bright future . Based on this fantastic photography , Hudson looks like he ’ s well on his way !
