Breakfast brings me to Nourish Kitchen, walking
distance from Fisherman’s Warf, Laurel Point Park
and a row of beautiful heritage mansions. Inside, I
notice that this renovated heritage home is on theme
with the neighbourhood. There’s a mixture of post-
modern and antique furniture, a café bar, a dining area
and multiple eat-work spaces. The vibe here makes me
feel like a tourist, time travelling between the 1930s
and modern day, pining for sustenance. I choose the
Benny in the Moment, poached eggs with a turmeric
cashew hollandaise. Who knew traditional buttery
hollandaise could be upstaged by cashew nuts?
Sufficiently powered up, I begin the drive along the
Dallas Road coastline. It’s etched with rugged beaches,
crusty barnacle-covered rocky islands on one side. On
the other, multi-million dollar post-modern concrete-
and-glass homes are battling it out with heritage homes
for architectural supremacy. I cruise the winding roads
past Cordova Bay to Mount Douglas Park and drive
up the 213-metre elevation to a sanctioned parking lot
with a pretty good view.
A short hike later, I reach a circular concrete look-
out, stand on the edge of the metre-high structure and
gingerly spin 360 degrees to take in the deep, sprawling
sights. Blue skies open up crystal clear views of the
Gulf Island National Park Reserve, D’Arcy Island,
the entire Victoria Harbour and breathtaking inland
viewpoints. With a nearly full SD card, I slither my
way down the mountain, thirsty for a casual craft beer
spot and an early night.
The Drake is the perfect old-school-bar-cum-hipster
craft-beer training ground. Here, I get easily acquainted
with a Philips Pilsener and then a Breakside ISA.
