What a year of awards for Subaru!
IIHS safety pick top honours and
Subaru’s commitment to safety is strong.
Nearly all our models for four years in a
row (2010-13) are Top Safety Picks from
the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety
(IIHS). No other manufacturer can make
this claim.
But this year something special has also
occurred—something that advances our
commitment to safety above our usual
ultra-high standard. Thanks to Subaru’s
EyeSight™ technology, the 2014 Forester,
Legacy and Outback have won a new,
high rating called Top Safety Pick Plus
(TSP+) signifying their advanced collision
prevention systems. It’s a new and
highest possible mark.
Subaru Legacy, Outback and Forester
are among just 22 vehicles to be

selected as a 2014 TSP+ by the IIHS.
Two other Subaru vehicles, the Impreza
and XV Crosstrek – were also named a
Top Safety Pick.
These examinations are independent of
the U.S. government’s NHTSA ratings and
are generally more difficult challenges.
To look at roof strength, IIHS simulates a
vehicle rollover and the moderate overlap
test, which replicates crashing head-on
into a pole or barrier.
To test the crash prevention
technology, the IIHS looks at lessening
impact severity at two different speeds
(one at 12 and one at 25 mph) to see how
well the systems respond. Vehicles are
then given a rating from Superior (best),
Advanced or Basic, and cars that do not

offer forward collision warning or auto
braking are not selected in this category.
All three Subaru models earned a perfect
score to receive a Superior rating.

or TOP SAFETY PICK are the best vehicle
choices for safety within size categories,”
the IIHS noted.

VALUES, TOO
Being selected as IIHS Top Safety Picks
would be kudos enough but Subaru’s
awards have kept coming this year. There
were also two top honours for retained or
‘residual value’ for several Subaru models,
and we are very proud of that, too.
ALG, the industry benchmark for residual
