Some digital tools used in order to present the material and introduce the activities were Menti ( https :// www . mentimeter . com /), Learning Apps ( https :// learningapps . org /) and Nearpod ( https :// nearpod . com /). The lesson started with a warm-up activity in which the students were asked to write their favourite word in English using the Menti app on their phones , thus creating a word cloud .
The students were then presented with a list of words and asked if they knew their meaning and what they had in common . The words given were : homer , permacrisis , goblin mode , gaslighting and teal ( independents ), and they had all been chosen ‘ word of the year ’ by different dictionaries in 2022 : homer by Cambridge dictionary , permacrisis by Collins dictionary , goblin mode by Oxford dictionary , gaslighting by Merriam-Webster dictionary and teal ( independents ) by Macquarie dictionary . This introduction of the vocabulary was followed by some interactive practice using Learning Apps , during which students became familiar with the meaning of the words ( one exercise required them to match the words with their definitions and one to match the words with the pictures ).
