MODERN TECHNIQUES OF TEACHING CULTURE TO LOWER SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Abstract : Interactive methods and techniques aim at using a type of multidirectional communication , and the teacher tries to develop a democratic relationship with the students . The partnership between students and teacher is based on principles such as collaboration and respect . These methods and techniques encourage learning through discovery and are concerned with contributing to the optimal development of the student ' s personality . Students are thus subjects of the didactic process , and their motivation is intrinsic , as education is viewed from the perspective of curiosity and creativity

Traditional methods and techniques emphasize the transmission of knowledge and communication belongs almost exclusively to the teacher . The student is seen from the perspective of an object of instruction , which does not have too many opportunities to contribute to the development of the lesson . Teachers who use traditional methods and techniques are interested in the student learning the content of the lesson , so they are concerned with the informative segment of teaching . Following this vision , an autocratic relationship develops between the teacher and his students , leading to extrinsic motivation for the learning process .
Modern techniques and methods are often also called interactive or activeparticipatory , since the student is seen as an active participant in the didactic process . Active participation , cooperation and initiative are emphasized through these methods .
In what follows , some modern specific techniques and even procedures used in teaching culture classes will be presented .
Multimedia learning ( teaching culture by means of modern technology ) The Internet is a rich source of materials that can be used in teaching cultural elements to lower secondary school students . It is used both by teachers during the planning stage and by students to research on different topics . In order to transmit cultural knowledge , teachers should also bring in the class videos , PowerPoint presentations , online games , pictures . It is important to challenge our students with authentic materials , in order for them to be able to fully tackle cultural elements . During the implementation of a culture-based optional course , it may be assumed that there was not only single lesson in which the modern technology was not made used of . The students solved online worksheets , they made or played online games , they searched for information on different sites .
Brainstorming It is a frequently used method in which the students are given the same task and they have to think of as many ideas as possible concerning it . Brainstorming involves the spontaneous contribution of ideas from all participants to a speaking activity . Added to producing ideas , students are asked to motivate their contributions .
