THE LION OF TRIANA

One of the most magical places that holds so much history and legends from the past is the neighbourhood located across the river: Triana. Full of folklore, joy and authenticity, its inhabitants, also known as the Trianeros, can tell us countless stories about their neighbourhood, considered by many other cities or towns.

Hidden in the bridge of Triana we can find the head of a lion. It is at the bottom of the bridge, on the shore that overlooks Betis Street. Going down next to the Mariatrifulca restaurant, just look to the left, and we can see it in the corner. And what mystery does this lion hide? Well, in addition to its decorative function, for centuries it was the indicator that warned the people of Triana of the floods. When the water reached the lion's mouth, the inhabitants of Triana ran to their homes to prepare for the barren. They placed all the furniture and important objects in the highest places, such as above the cupboards, to combat the possible damage caused by water.

For a long time, the old Seville suffered the consequences of terrible floods of the Guadalquivir River. Therefore, you can find tiles in the city and on the river banks, which indicate how the water level. For this reason, the government ordered the diversion of the river, remaining parallel to the channel that ends in a dam, which is the river that we can see today crossing the Triana bridge.

So if you visit or pass by the bridge of Triana, you now know the story of the lion's head and where you can find it.
