There are so many ideas being worked on all the time that are helping to change our dangerous trajectories into more positive and sustainable possibilities. The idea that humans have the power to either destroy world or live within its systems should be a start. — Aaron Mangle sightlines’ BIG idea .................................. The first thing that comes to mind is we’ve got to de-fetishize the automobile. Part of me can’t believe it’s 2014 and we’re still bombarded with car ads, and new cars and trucks are seen as desirable items to own. I realize for many people vehicles are a necessity, but for many others they’re simply a luxury and a convenience. As long as we’re thinking “big,” I’d say we really have to restructure our communities and our way of life so that vehicles no longer feel like a necessity. Bike lanes, public transit, and car-share programs are all a good star t, but we may also need to reexamine our pace of life, which sped up when car-culture took off in the mid-20th centur y. We can’t go back to the past, but we may need to slow down. — Eric Axen 19 [sic] fall 2014.indd 20 14-10-07 7:00 PM
