he was involved with a community radio station called
CICK. I could tell Ken had a deep appreciation of music
and through a great conversation, I ended up sitting in
with him during one of his shows. Shortly after that I had
my own show. November 28, 2012 was my first show on
CICK; the first song I played was from my favourite Tony
Rice album called Manzanita.
[sic]: What’s your show name/idea/concept?
TS: My sho w is called The Bluegrass Connection and
the idea is to mak e connections through acoustic music.
It amazes me ho w, in the b luegrass music world, there’s
an incredible level of collaboration and support between
musicians. It seems to me the musicians are playing music
for the lo ve of it and end up pla ying on other ar tists’
albums as collabora tors and suppor ters. If you pick up
any modern bluegrass CD and read the credits, you often
discover amazing connections between musicians that
come up over and over again. It’s a wonderful thing. I try
to show listeners some of these connections dur ing the
songs I play on my show.
station and the way I see it, people expect volunteers in
the community to be themselves. I’ve become much more
relaxed and ha ve a hoot w eek after w eek. I especiall y
love being in the studio—the train car. It’s a cool feeling
knowing the rail car had pr obably been back and for th
across the province or even Canada a few hundred times.
I have to acknowledge the CICK board of dir ectors and
all the community sponsors for making this whole thing
possible. CICK is a very cool gig.
[sic]: Can you pick out a highlight experience you’ve had
and describe what it was like?
TS: I’ve had a few cool exper iences on the sho w. The
first was when Jenny Lester was a guest. She brought her
guitar with her and pla yed four or fiv e songs on the air ,
and we talked about music for almost the entire show. It
was a memorable experience listening and watching her
play an old favourite song of mine called Bury Me Beneath
the Willow Tree. Jenny is incredibly talented and I lo ve
her voice and guitar playing. Her songs can br ing you to
tears they are so beautiful. I felt lucky to be a part of the
moment. Also, Jason and Pharis Romero were guests on
