is a local one day festival near Antwerp in Belgium . In the past , it has taken place in a tent , since the local events venue has undergone some serious rebuilding . Now , Oostmalle rockt takes place in the new OC De Notelaar and the basement of the nearby youthclub . Both are nice new buildings , where accoustics seem to have been on the requirements list for the builders . Especially in the larger DE NOTELAAR . Still a concrete box , the roughly sprayed concrete on the ceiling helps to loose the sharp edges in the sound , and seems to prevent to much echoing .
Kicking of the party on the main stage , are BLACK LEATHER JACKET . Solid guitarrumbles , immediately fill the venue , and the crowd doesn ' t need too much convincing to step forward . With sounds floating somewhere between ' 80 ' s punkrock , more recent garagerock and straight forward bluesrock , these guys set the bar high for a night full off old school rock entertainment . Playing songs from their upcoming EP , the band collects a nice example of rock , punk , bluess and metal minded fans in front of the stage . No surprise , with music that is as allround
Making silence disappear for the next few hours in the rockxxl basement , are PRESSURE COMMANDER . And I believe the silence may need some convincing to find the guts to return tonight . In a dark setting , made by just a single white spotlight behind the drums , the band plays a set that suits the atmosphere like a glove . Dark , brutal , raw and oh so controlled at the same time . PRESSURE COMMANDER seems to be much more at home on this stage , then they were on the stage at FRIETROCK , a few months ago . With obvious tones of both death metal and stoner rock , this may not be a band that will easily find fans outside their niche , but lovers of the heavier genres who are looking for quality should check them out . And buy some of their merch . Since someone had the tasteless idea to steal some of their shirts , while the band was on stage tonight .
On the main stage , THE BLACK HIGH have set up their gear . Playing bluesrock of the modern kind , these guys should have the crowd going in no time . During the melodical solo ' s they manage to get some heads bumping , and at the end of the songs , the crowd cheers and applauds the band . But still , I feel THE BLACK HIGH is not reaching their full potential . After two or three songs however , they seem to have found another barrel of energy , and suddenly , their sound is much more crisp and refined . It ' s almost like opening a fresh tin of pringles , and shoving them in your hungry mouth . In hindsight , the band wasn ' t playing on their own gear . Only the guitar of the frontman wasn ' t borrowed . I guess that will slow a band down a bit in the first songs . And actually , it speaks for them , they found it in
