These birds called GA- JPANV in Gujarati, PRAVALPAAD in Nepali etc theirs regional names. The scientific name Himantopus is comes from the Greek word that meaning strap foot. They are also known as Pied Stilt in past but now its use for Austra- lian species. Common Stilt is a widely distributed very long legged wader in the avocet and stilt family. The adults are 12 to 15 inches long. Common Stilt have very long pink legs, white head, a long thin black bill and are blackish above and white below and neck with a varying amount of black. They have the top of the head are normally white in winter, females have less black on head than males and neck all year round. Immature birds are grey with black and have a sandy hue on the wings. 5
