For many boaters, the perfect day on the water isn’ t complete without a loyal dog by their side. Whether you’ re cruising along the coast, fishing on a quiet lake, or anchoring at a sandbar, bringing your pup aboard can add fun, companionship, and even a little extra security. But boating with dogs takes preparation and awareness to keep your canine crew member safe and happy.

First, invest in a dog life jacket— even strong swimmers can tire quickly or struggle in currents. Look for a snug fit with a sturdy handle on top to help lift them back aboard. Before setting sail, let your dog explore the boat while docked so they get used to the space and motion.
Shade and hydration are essential. Dogs overheat faster than humans, so bring plenty of water, a shaded area, and a non-slip mat for comfort. A designated potty plan is also key— some dogs can be trained to use a turf mat or puppy pad onboard.
Not all dogs love the waves, so start with short trips. Watch for signs of seasickness or anxiety, and never force your dog into the water if they’ re unsure.
Finally, be mindful of wildlife, fishing gear, and hot surfaces under paw. A curious dog can get tangled or burned if you’ re not paying attention.
With the right setup and attitude, boating can become your dog’ s favorite adventure— tail wags, wind in the fur, and all. Just remember: happy dog, happy boat!
