Catch and release is more than just a technique— it’ s a philosophy embraced by anglers who value both the thrill of the sport and the sustainability of fish populations. Practiced properly, it allows fish to survive and thrive after being caught, helping to preserve waterways for future generations.
The process begins with appropriate gear. Use barbless or circle hooks when possible— they’ re easier to remove and cause less damage. Match your tackle to the size of fish you expect to catch; too light, and you’ ll prolong the fight, exhausting the fish.
Handle your catch with wet hands or gloves to avoid removing their protective slime, which prevents infection. Keep the fish in the water as much as possible. If a photo is a must, be quick and support the fish horizontally with both hands.
Removing the hook gently is crucial. If it’ s deeply embedded, cut the line close to the mouth— fish can often expel it naturally over time. Never yank or tug.
Reviving the fish before release may be necessary. Hold it upright in the water, facing into the current, and gently move it back and forth until it swims away under its own power.
Catch and release is especially vital in heavily fished areas or during spawning seasons. By respecting the fish and the ecosystem, anglers help maintain balance and ensure the excitement of fishing doesn’ t come at nature’ s expense.
In short, it’ s not just about letting the fish go— it’ s about giving it the best chance to live. That’ s the true art of catch and release.
