The seniors, decked out in maroon robes and some
clad in academic cords, lined up in alphabetical order
an hour before the ceremony, hugging and posing
for photos with one another while they waited.
Senior Gabriel Hernandez said graduation day was a
mixture of nervousness and excitement.
“The high point is honestly just making it to
graduation,” Hernandez said. “You build up to
wanting to leave and then you finally make it. You’ve
passed all your classes and you’re ready to move
on. It’s a bit of relief, but at the same time it makes
you a little nervous to see what’s going to happen
afterwards.”
Hernandez said he didn’t exactly know how his life
would unfold after high school, but he had plans to
attend college.
“I’d like to major in marine biology, but my dad also
wants me to study in business so I’ll probably major
in both,” he said.
Fellow senior Jessica Borrego said she was thrilled to
finally graduate.
“It feels amazing,” Borrego said. “You know you’ve
accomplished the thing you set out to do four years
ago. But, it’s gone by so fast.”
Despite the speed at which she felt her high school
years flew past, Borrego said she still remembered
feeling lost on her first day at Sherman High School,
both in the halls and personally. She said her family
was always there to support her when she doubted
herself or encountered hard times, but she was able
to find self-confidence too through her high school
trials and experiences.
“You figure out a lot about who you are in your high
school years,” Borrego said. “You really do.”
