For eighth grade Piner
Middle School student Emily
Kindt, Naviance has already
helped with career planning.
Emily dreams of working in
the medical profession. “I
want to be a nurse because I
like dealing with people and
want to help them,” Emily
said, when asked about
her career aspirations. “The
career survey said nursing
was a good match.”
Used by school districts
around the country and
throughout Texas, Naviance
was first introduced to
Sherman ISD students like
Emily in February when
eighth graders in several
Career and Technology
classes at Sherman High
School completed what
Naviance calls the Career
Key and Career Cluster
Inventory. “At first I thought,
why are they asking me to
think about a career now? But it really helped,”
Emily said. Transition to ninth grade now
includes a formal high school graduation plan
that identifies course selections in Health Science
classes that will prepare her for a nursing career.
“... we know establishing a high school graduation
plan that aligns with a student’s interests and
abilities will lead them toward a fulfilling and
reward ing career.”
The comprehensive college and career planning
solutions offered through Naviance emphasize
student self-discovery, academic planning,
career discovery and inventories, college search
tools, and college application resources. The
Naviance Family Connection feature is currently
available to Piner Middle and Sherman High
School students and parents. Sherman ISD plans
to expand the use of the online resource to all
students in grades 6
through 12 during
the 2018-19
school year.
