The Women ’ s Studies Department , The Laurel Center and LIBERATE presented the 16th annual Take Back the Night event this spring to commemorate Sexual Assault Awareness Month . The event featured “ T-O-T-A-L-L-Y !” by actress Kimleigh Smith . In the powerful and heartbreaking theatrical piece , Smith took the audience through a young cheerleader ’ s transformation into a powerful woman who reclaims her sexuality and lives as a whole , healthy woman who cheers for life . Following the performance , members of the Shenandoah community participated in the Glass Breaking Project , a unique and empowering Shenandoah tradition . collaboration with the Department of Mass Communication & Women ’ s Studies , presented the festival in March at Stimpson Auditorium in Halpin-Harrison Hall . s e m e s t e r h i g h l i g h t s

University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill Associate Professor of Science Karl Castillo , Ph . D ., discussed the effects of climate change on coral reef growth at Shenandoah ’ s annual Warrington Science Speaker and Symposium this spring . Dr . Castillo ’ s work focuses on understanding how past and current climate changes affect coral reef growth , which allows scientists to predict the impacts of future climate changes on coral reef ecosystems . His findings have been published in several scientific journals , including PLoS One , Limnology and Oceanography Methods , Conservation Letters , and Nature Climate Change . The presentation was followed by the Warrington Science Symposium , which featured a poster session of research projects prepared by Shenandoah undergraduates majoring in the sciences and mathematics . The Warrington Science Speaker and Symposium is a continuing series made possible by a grant from the Warrington Endowment .
Shenandoah held its first-ever Global Film Festival this spring . Combining efforts from the organizers of the French and Latin American Film Festivals , the event featured screenings of “ El secreto de sus ojos ” (“ The Secret in Their Eyes ,” Argentina , 2009 ); “ Nostalgia de la luz ” (“ Nostalgia for the Light ,” Chile , 2010 ); “ Tomboy ” ( France , 2011 ); “ Saving Face ” ( United States / Pakistan , 2012 ); and “ Le Gamin au Vélo ” (“ The Child With the Bike ,” Belgium / France , 2011 ). Professor of Environmental Studies and Biology Woodward Bousquet and a number of environmental studies students received the Joe Penfold Memorial Award for Grassroots Conservation Efforts . Presented by the Mason-Dixon Outdoor Writers Association , the award honors 20 years of work by Dr . Bousquet and his students to protect , preserve and educate the public about the Abrams Creek Wetlands Preserve . Winchester photojournalist Marie Majarov nominated Bousquet and his students , who were featured in Majarov ’ s “ Abrams Creek Wetlands : Wet Prairies and Calcareous Muck Fens !” article , published in the November / December 2012 issue of Virginia Wildlife Magazine .
The Department of Kinesiology inducted charter members into Phi Epsilon Kappa ( PEK ), the national professional honor fraternity for those studying physical education and kinesiology . PEK Executive Director Jeff Vesseley conducted the ceremony . To join PEK , kinesiology students must exhibit academic excellence and profess responsibility to the profession and their fraternal brothers . Former Professor of Mass Communication Elizabeth Colton returned to campus to speak on “ Global Diplomacy and the Media : My Life in the World ’ s Hot Spots .” Colton left Shenandoah in 2000 to join the Foreign Service , where she spent more than 10 years in global “ hot spots ,” including the U . S . Embassies in Algeria , Egypt , Iraq , Pakistan , Saudi Arabia and Sudan . Prior to joining the Foreign Service , Elizabeth Colton was a journalist covering foreign policy and world news . An Emmy Award-winning reporter for ABC News , Colton also worked at Newsweek , National Public Radio , Mutual Broadcasting and the Asheville Citizen-Times . Colton worked as press secretary to the Rev . Jesse L . Jackson during his presidential campaign in 1988 and authored “ The Jackson Phenomenon : The Man , the Power , the Message .”
