>We often don’t think of who’s actually behind some of our favorite characters, commercials, etc. I love that you are one of the voices behind the scenes and you’re an African American woman! Can you tell me how you got started in this industry?
I happened to catch a quote from a local voice talent while reading a magazine and realized that people get paid to talk! Wha’ tha what? I had no idea! When I reflect on all the trouble I got into for talking….the irony and beauty overwhelmed me! Research shows that people can even make careers with talking and speaking! I was so blown away that I contacted the voice talent. After that conversation, I went into prayer. I knew shortly after that I’d been bitten by the voice artist bug!
>Not only are you a voice over artist but you’re running your own business. What are some advantages of being a black entrepreneur?
Yes and yes….and let me tell you,it is anything BUT easy! If all I had to do is talk and play around with my voice & mastering scripts, I’d be as cool as a cucumber. God blessed me with a voice. People respond to it and I love it! The reality is that the “running the business” part can spread even the person with the best time management skills thin! There’s setting up your core (EIN, Business accounts, etc), networking, advertising, learning the ins and outs of the industry, making your online presence known (social media, Google Adwords, etc.), and so much more in addition to the talking jobs! I seriously see a business manager in my future lol. It’s a lot, but I absolutely love being a black entrepreneur! I love being different and being in an industry where people may or may not know I’m black. I love being a double minority (black + female) and finding opportunities that especially “fit” me and “grow” me. I love showing my daughter that hard work and determination can only make you shine brighter when you focus on your gift.
>Technology is ever changing. Do you think it creates a challenge for your skill set or do you think it creates an advantage for you in this industry?
* I’m an advocate for technology (and believe it’s great as long as it works) Ha! The advance of technology has changed the voice talent game. It has allowed many new, talented voice artists to compete on national and even global level! You can record in Tennessee or Georgia and be heard on a station in the UK! This is a huge advantage!
