4-Year MD Program Founding Dean’ s Message
Fall 2023 is a great time for a progress report and celebration of the COM team’ s accomplishments. To date, we have made unprecedented strides, in some cases exceeding the high bar that we have set for ourselves while being mindful of our commitment to build an enduring part of our University with national recognition through our new 4-Year MD program.
We are justly proud of the students that we have recruited and enrolled in this ambitious venture. As a group, these first-year students are mature beyond their ages, very focused, and highly success-oriented. They have demonstrated leadership in helping us enhance the curriculum that effectively trains them to become outstanding physician leaders during the four years that they will be with us, and beyond.
The students have responded very well to standardized patient training activities, and the CDU Advantage. One longitudinal course, Medicine and Society, offers a team-oriented project called the Community Engaged Research Project( CERP) a serious commitment to achieving the goals that the new 4-year MD program has established. Bravo to them.
Under Dean Monica Ferrini, the College of Science and Health has made great strides, evidenced by its Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences program being named the best in the country ahead of Johns Hopkins University and George Washington University through training and career advancement, in a poll conducted by Best Value Schools. COSH has made good on the CDU mission to provide training on the relationship between public health policy and community engagement.
Another notable accomplishment is the Black Maternal Health Program’ s momentous achievement of a $ 9M HRSA grant that ensures support for mothers from providers committed to eradicating health disparities.
The results are in. This is a great moment to be a Mighty Lion.
Sincerely, Deborah Prothrow-Stith, MD Founding Dean, CDU COM 4-Year MD Program
This year has brought many notable achievements throughout the University. We congratulate the newly re-named Mervyn M. Dymally College of Nursing, and laud Dean Gail Washington and her team for setting such a high bar in student success. We look forward to partnering with the MMDCON in future joint endeavors.
