LCME Update( continued)
Referencing Section 5 of the DCI, he noted the critical importance of tying the practice plan to the budget. He also noted the potential risks associated with establishing a clinical site in an underserved setting. Then there is the crucial issue affecting other subcommittees: how to differentiate the IMEP from the current MEP relationship with UCLA. Dr. Vargas described the need to establish and document separate financial structures in the self-study. He described the IMEP’ s major hubs and noted CDU’ s evolution as a major research enterprise led by Vice-President Jay Vadgama as a primary asset.
The goals of GME include establishing leading-edge relationships and clinical affiliations, and setting up ongoing training sites. The self-study language must demonstrate both a high quality of educational activity and dedicated professional oversight in the teaching of students.
The resourcing strategy has CDU doing background research on prospective clinical partners based on the types of clinical rotations as well as services available to students. If a residential program is already in place, it will make the potential affiliation much easier, Dr. Vargas noted. CDU senior representatives such as President Carlisle and Dean Prothrow-Stith will make the initial inquiry. A potential clinical affiliation fee of $ 250,000 was also mentioned as part of the process.
Curriculum subcommittee Co-Chair Dr. Glenda Lindsey noted that the initial draft of her document as complete. The responsibility is now to go through the document and review it for any inconsistencies. The subcommittee plans to seek input from community faculty and others on the language present in various sections of the document. Co-Chair Dr. Victor Chaban noted that the curriculum is a very new, unique curriculum wellsuited for IMEP planning.
Dr, Lindsey noted that in updating the terminology, the intent is to create consistency throughout the DCI and differentiate the current MEP curriculum from the new IMEP curriculum. The group is working on Standard 7 with emphasis on the preclerkship phase. The team is meeting weekly to develop detailed curriculum content for the duration of the 1½ half year preclerkship.
The curriculum will be fully developed by the time of the LCME site visit, she noted. Details of the individual course objectives and the overall program objectives will be fully fleshed out. The document will show the pathway for students to meet all of the objectives for graduation.
She noted that the work is progressing very well.“ I didn’ t expect the group would be this far along. The program needs to be independent and is not expected to cross purposes with the MEP. The MEP will have its own program and course objectives, through the existing UCLA relationship,” she said.
The subcommittee is planning to develop a simulation program for the IMEP by the end of July.“ The program will be longitudinal, as will the research component. Now we’ re trying to fine tune the program in anticipation of the self-study,” she added.
The goals of GME include establishing leading-edge relationships and clinical affiliations, and setting up ongoing training sites. The self-study language must demonstrate both a high quality of educational activity and dedicated professional oversight in the teaching of students.
