LCME Update

COM Spring Full Faculty Meeting Offers a Deeper Look into the LCME Development Process

The May 20th Spring full faculty meeting offered a timely look at the progress made toward completing the self-study document that is at the core of the LCME submission. The various subcommittees were in attendance via Zoomcast and scheduled to meet later in the evening’ s agenda. At the conclusion of their respective strategy sessions, Chairs and Co-Chairs provided progress updates.
The meeting began with a welcome address by Faculty Executive Board Chair Dr. Eleby Washington. Dean Prothrow- Stith recapped the meeting purpose, reminding the assembly of the eighteen-month time window during which the committees are charged to complete the self-study Data Collection Instrument( DCI). She thanked the teams for their commitment to the work, and showed participants an overview PowerPoint presentation as a refresher of the LCME process.
The Dean discussed progress on the Health Professions Education Building( HPEB) and concluded her remarks with the announcement that the S / L / A / M architectural team had received approval to move into the schematic design phase of the project. A virtual tour of the new Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine in Pasadena served as an effective complement to the Dean’ s announcement about the next phase of S / L / A / M’ s work. The tour featured a view of the physical building, equipment, technologies, and ended with a musical tribute by recording artist John Legend.
She offered a geographical contrast between the IMEP project and the availability of medical training in metropolitan Boston. She noted that SPA 6 is an area of 1 million plus residents with no current medical school; whereas the city of Boston( population 692,000) has four medical schools within its metro area.
Senior Associate Dean Ron Edelstein and Tripp Umbach Senior Principal Angie Vincent took participants through the immediate tasks associated with completing the selfstudy document. Dr. Edelstein discussed three key tasks: a progress update on the DCI, with the charge of populating the 12 Standards and 96 elements; refining the plan for congruence with the self-study; and laying groundwork for the implementation plan with an eye to hiring key faculty and other key tasks.
The night’ s work was therefore devoted to a progress assessment of subcommittees’ task accomplishments to date; determining what further work needs to be done; and finally, what gaps remain and how data can be configured to fit the various components of the self-study. Angie Vincent noted that this phase will culminate with a second draft of the self-study to be completed by June 19th. During the breakout session, the various subcommittee members met regarding their respective assignments.
Educational Resources subcommittee Co-Chair Dr. Roberto Vargas provided a big picture overview of his subcommittee’ s tasks that included structuring clinical clerkships and assisting the project team in securing financing for clinical training; as well as developing clinical partnerships.
Provost Steven Michael offered the assessment that the IMEP needs a big vision. He encouraged people to continue to participate actively help to grow the vision.
Dean Prothrow-Stith mentioned that the HPEB project had received its first financial commitment of $ 50,000 from noted cardiologist and longtime CDU supporter Dr. Richard Allen Williams. She also noted that meetings with the Brakeley Briscoe fundraising consultant have been creative, thoughtful, and focused.
