3. Data Collection and Analysis
The method of interview was employed for the purposes of this research,
with previously defined semi-structured questionnaires consisting of open-
ended and close-ended questions. The questions were formulated in a simple
and clear manner adapted to the respondents’ idiolect to ensure maximum
comprehension. The questionnaires were categorized in 4 segments:
- Demographic data;
- Lifestyle;
- Relationship and work with clients;
- Personal health.
All interviews were conducted by two highly trained individuals, i.e.
interviewers who are actively involved in STAR-STAR’s activities and are
experienced in communication with sex workers on topics related to everyday
life of a sex worker, their relationship with clients, health and health care.
For analytical purposes, the following were subjected to qualitative
descriptive processing: demographic data and responses to questions related
to the reasons why these individuals became engaged sex work, the positive
and negative aspects of sex work from their experience and perspective, the
manner in which they do their job, the rapport and work with clients, their
future, everyday life, as well as their mental and physical health, the impact
their job has on their mental and physical health and healthcare.
The research was conducted in the period between October and November
2017 in Skopje, on the indoor and outdoor sex work scene. All interviews
were finished in alignment with a previously determined timeframe and were
recorded on a small digital recorder, after which they were all consistently
transcribed. All participants consented to their involvement in this research.
