SPRING 2019
DIRECTOR’S NOTE .........................................................
left Nauticus and I went there as
acting Director for 18-months until
Hank Lynch was hired.
I am learning a lot in this new
position, which reunites me with
Karen Rudd, Dorothy Coakley
and Debra Burrell. They have a lot
of great, smart people working
here—Lori Crouch, Michelle
Washington and Kelly Straub, to
name but a few. Much like our
Cultural Facilities team, they work
very hard and very long hours.
I
’m wrapping up my third week
at City Hall as the acting head of
Marketing and Communications
(which all of you know I know
nothing about) while the City
conducts a hiring process to
replace the previous Director,
Michael Brown.
Some of you may remember I did
this once before when Rich Conti
EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT, PG 3
The Marketing portion of
Marketing and Communications
will be absorbed by VisitNorfolk,
and this department will become
what it once was: The Office of
Communications. The primary
functions of department staff
will be to inform the public on
City-related issues and events; to
process all City FOIA requests;
to film various events, such
as Council meetings, budget
hearings and special events; and
EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT, PG 5
to act as communication liaisons
with other City departments.
(For example, Mary Keough is the
liaison to our Department, Cultural
Facilities. I never knew that until
my work here, on the fourth floor.)
The main reason I wanted to write
about this newly appointed role,
however, is that I could not have
done it if not for all of you. The
people at Cultural Facilities, Arts
and Entertainment are such a great
team that I can help to manage
another Department and not worry
(too much) about how things are
running at Scope and MacArthur
Memorial. I know work will be
handled, and our patrons and
promoters will be taken care of.
So, to all of you I say thank you
for making it possible for me to
be on the fourth floor of City Hall,
but I look forward to coming home
to my unwindowed office, and my
family at Scope.
