3 EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: REBECCA MATYJASIK
H
ow much is it?” If you know
Rebecca, you know this
refrain. She’s our very own
no-nonsense CPA, and if
the adage is true—a fool and his
money are easily parted—one
thing is for certain. Matyjasik is
nobody’s fool.
“Accounting can be very
mundane; we produce financial
statements. It can be the same
thing every month: profit and loss
statements, accounts receivable.
Here, every show is completely
different, financially. Rob and
Megan put the deals together,
and I interpret those deals.”
Never bored—always busy. That’s
accounting in entertainment—if
you’re lucky.
And busy she is; one of the
hardest-working women in show
business. On event nights, you
can find her on site, settling
shows with promotors and artists,
making sure the right people get
paid. With a jam-packed holiday
season here at SevenVenues, the
numbers won’t wait—she’s been
on this campus every day for more
than a week, with a 12-day run
ahead of her.
But, when the dust settles and the
downtime comes, there’s family.
Born and raised in Chesapeake,
Rebecca moved to Germany at 19.
“I met my husband there, we got
married in Denmark, and my son
was born in Heidelberg. I enjoyed
it, but I missed home.”
To our good fortune, Rebecca
made it back to the states and
has been with SevenVenues for
14 years. She’s an information-
gatherer, an Excel-maker (the
formatting!), and a numbers
cruncher, keeping us all on track
for success.
When she’s not working, Rebecca
is at the gym, DVR-ing (if you
Scott, Rebecca, Jonathon and Max the Dog
need to talk This Is Us, she’s
here for it), or spending time
with family—husband Scott,
a K9 officer with Norfolk PD;
son Jonathon; and their mutt
menagerie (which includes a
13-year-old pet dog, an 11-year-old
retired police dog, and an 8-year-
old working doggo). “We joke
sometimes that we’re running a
geriatric home—for dogs.”
Rebecca means business. It’s true.
Check and double check those
numbers, folks. But the magic of a
spectacle isn’t lost on her. Favorite
show of all time? Ringling Bros.
and Barnum & Bailey Circus. An
institution, and a Norfolk staple
since 1919. “I was sorry to see it
go. It was a family tradition for us.
My parents brought me to see the
Circus at Scope every year when
I was small. After I had my son, I
brought him every year, too.”
They may have brought down the
Big Top, but here’s to Rebecca
and lots of new memory-making.
They’re worth every penny.
