It took me a while to define my theme for all my work , but when I reflected , there seemed to be a clear connection between my interest in movement and gesture , with a specific interest in how this is translated in the female form . I wanted to portray the female nude in a way that abstracted it and took away the immediate impression of the nude . In a lot of my work , it ’ s hard to notice parts of the female body , as I used quite extreme cropping and close ups , as well as unconventional colours .
I tried various techniques , always experimenting and trying new things . I enjoyed drawing and working in charcoal as it is very loose and therefore I could emphasise movement and fluidity . I also used a lot of paint : acrylic for fasterdrying pieces where I didn ’ t want to blend elements , and oil paint to blend and merge the paint together . I tried printing and painting onto different materials , as it was all quite experimental for me . I also enjoyed using my hands and fingers in my art ; I found this made the materials easier to control and often made the work smoother and more fluid . In some pieces , I used thick knives to slather on the paint to create texture . I really liked the 3D element paint can create .
The Art department has been where I ’ ve spent most of my time in the Sixth Form . Knowing I can come here to work or paint has helped me a lot , and it ’ s had a positive effect on my other subjects , taking stress and transforming it into an expressive outlet through creativity , something I believe everyone should engage in .
