Sevenoaks 25: IB Art Exhibition | Page 15

Oliver Murray
Art has always been my therapy , throughout GCSEs and the IB . Heading into this course I was planning on sticking to what I knew best : printmaking , a medium I became passionate about during GCSEs . However my preferred artistic output method evolved quickly , soon after starting the IB course . My exhibition now features an etching , paintings , unconventional CD prints and a series of drawings . While the themes in my exhibition vary , some are connected through shared inspirations . My etching and series of giant drawings both come from the same trip to Geneva . I referenced the streamlined architectural design of the walls and ceiling in the UN Headquarters , blending geometry and abstraction .
Alongside my inspiration from architecture , I also drew from my passion for physics . Two experiments that I found visually and conceptually compelling were the paradigmshifting single slit diffraction pattern and emission spectra experiments . Both illustrate the wave-particle duality of light ; an idea I explored in my paintings . The vibrant colours and dynamic patterns in these works aim to capture the complexity of these groundbreaking discoveries in the world of physics .
And finally , through exploration of darkroom film development , I found a new passion for distorted photography , consisting of my video of spinning warped CDs , and CD prints . I found myself contorting the flow of ink across each CD , producing unique and natural patterns . These provided a second demonstration of nature and its ever-changing characteristics .
