The dam is generally safe and I have not heard of major incidents happening at the dam. I have also been camping there since my school days and have not had any incidents myself. However, keep valuables in your car or on you when you go out fishing, don’t leave things lying around camp and don’t go camping alone.

Rates are very affordable and make the drive from Gauteng all that much easier. Entry fees into the dam are charged per vehicle and will cost either R90 per vehicle with a maximum of 5 persons in the vehicle or R110 for 8 persons in a Vehicle per day. Camping is charged per tent and the daily rate is R35 per tent.

Rates and Facilities:

The dam is managed by the Middelburg municipality and although there are no chalets, the camping grounds are well maintained. The caming areas are well manicured and there are ample dustbins for refuse. There are sufficient power points available, however a long extension may be needed at some spots. The ablutions facilities are well serviced. Do not expect star graded bathroom facilities, but they are well maintained and there is ample showers with hot water.

Large trees are in short supply and it is recommended that you bring a gazebo of sorts for some shade during the hottest parts of the day. Make sure you have enough tent pegs and a hammer to hit them into the rocky ground. The surrounding farms offer little resistance to the wind and it really picks up over the dam. The last thing you want is to have your gazebo blowing away. There is no shop at the dam and all food, drinks, ice and fire wood should be brought with you. There is a garage about 7km from the dam should you need to top up on supplies, or you could take the drive into Middelburg if you feel the need. For your braai’s, make sure to pack in a braai grid as there are no braaiing facilities at the dam and you will have to make your own with large rocks.
