What is your favorite Fly pattern?

My favourite fly to fish is a klippies stimulator with a small size 18 nymph as a dropper. The stimulator has been my most successful dry fly up to date, especially on the vaal, on a late afternoon with a big hatch just about to happen.

I also love to experiment with flies especially on a new venue that I haven't fished before. A good example is the articulated flies that I love to tie. They give that extra natural movement that I feel makes a huge difference even on a size 16 fly.

What is your Most Memorable Catch?

There are many catches in the last few years that I will remember forever, like the 19.5kg barbel, the 8.5kg carp and some of the monster yellows from the Vaal, but I must say the most memorable catches up to date, must be the few nice yellows I caught at Sterkfontein last year with the club on my first outing to Sterkies. Just having to try everything in your arsenal and to try and outwit those fish and eventually hooking and landing one of those perfect golden slabs, is a ballgame of a different sort, and will stay in your memory forever.

What is your favorite venue to go Fish?

Any venue on the Vaal works for me. What makes the Vaal so special, is that you never know what you have or can hook until you have it in the net. From small yellows to 15kg barbel, that Vaal is special. And the different techniques you can use also works for me. No two days in a row is the same condition and fishing wise. Sometimes you really need to dig deep and analyze all the knowledge you have in this wonderful sport of ours to land the few fish in difficult fishing conditions to make your day special.

What Is your preference to gear brands?

I have never been very picky when I comes to gear. I always bought the gear on the second hand Facebook page, where I could get it at a good bargain and the will be able to handle the tough conditions of the Vaal. However a year and a half ago, since I casted a Greys GR50 Rod in Nottingham, I fell in love with the brand. Since then I have bought 3 Greys rods and haven't regretted it one second.
