It was around mid-2012, that I realised that as a “fly fisher” I do not get on the water much, because I had no fishing friends or colleagues (at that stage it was once a year if I was lucky) – most fly fishing was done on the couch with a fly fishing magazine on my lap.
I contemplated this miserable state of affairs to a friend one day while having a home-brewed beer (my other passion at that time), actually hoping I could spark some interest in fly fishing with him…
A few days later he handed me a very short article about the JFFC that was published in the “Beeld”….which I lost, before reading attentively……
Turning to the Internet, and not remembering the club’s name (just remembered some random Letters with JF&C), I first went through at least a dozen of websites for various “Churches” and eventually stumbled upon the website for the JFFC. I sent a mail to the chairman, who replied with an application form……and the rest is history.
Where did you hear of the club?
What is your favorite species to fish for and why?
Smallmouth Yellow-fish….. cause it took me 4 year’s of trying before I eventually caught one – at Elgro, which is why Elgro is so special to me.
Being a loner, sucker for punishment and self-taught, I read a lot about fly fishing for yellow fish, and then applied what I interpreted from the literature (with zero results at-first). With fly-fishing for yellows (or fly-fishing in moving water in general I guess), it does not work that way, eventually, you realise that you do need some outside help, someone to guide you….and that is where the benefits from joining a club, or having fly fishing friends become very important…
My next favourite fish will be Tiger fish, because I have not even tried for it yet .
