Chris Coach of the Year in Oregon High School Girls 5A Golf. Wilsonville Assistant Principal and Athletic Director Josh Davis said“ Chris Bensel is building a dynasty here.”
When I asked Chris about a proud moment at Charbonneau golf this year I didn’ t get an answer talking about continually setting annual records for number of rounds played here or the beautiful new resort look of the white sand traps. Instead, he talked about a fundraiser held back in July when he had the girls each play nine holes with a group of four( men and ladies) from Charbonneau. It was an overwhelming success. Coach Bensel is more impressed by what wonderful young people these girls are than by their golf games, even though they can really play! The adults who played with them got to see what these young ladies were all about. Everyone seemed to relate really well and the outing could not have turned out any better.
The girls did OK at the tournament, playing on three different Pinehurst courses. Records weren’ t set but the experience was priceless. There is a camaraderie among the girls competitors that seems rare. The high school did not cover any of the expenses to get to the national event. Through fundraising the girls covered a little over one-half of their costs. Chris paid for his trip out of his own pocket. That is the kind of consummate professional the Charbonneau community and Wilsonville High is fortunate to have working for us.
