Bald Eagle Area

THE TREASURE OF BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP by Lou Bernard
Bald Eagle Township is one of the oldest townships in Clinton County, founded in 1772. This means it’ s been part of four counties, as they were divided up: Northumberland, Lycoming, Centre, and finally Clinton in 1839.
It was named after Native American Chief Bald Eagle. Most people know this, or at least have some idea. But did you know that there’ s a buried treasure someplace in the township? It all goes back to early resident John Reaville. John Reaville came to America from England in the mid-1800s, and got a job with a Pennsylvania coal mining company. They had a problem with the title to one of their mines, and hired Reaville to protect the mine while they straightened it out. He did this by living in the mine for eight months, for which the company was grateful.
For his dedication, they gave him the responsibility for overseeing several mining towns in Bald Eagle Township. He took over Revelton, Eagleton, Peacock, and Rock Cabin, directing the mining operations of them all.
Reaville built a mansion there, in what is now the Tangascootac area of the township, somewhere in the neighborhood of Revelton Road. He handled all of the mining procedures, and in fact, dealt with the first coal mine strike in Pennsylvania, which happened in Eagleton in 1865. John Reaville was said to have saved up money, and buried it in bags beneath his mansion. When he died in 1876, the money was unaccounted for. A year later, his wife died, delirious in the hospital, and she essentially confirmed the existence of the money by raving about it in her illness, talking about bags of money buried beneath her home.
It’ s never turned up, as far as anyone knows. Somewhere in Bald Eagle Township is a lost treasure, hidden by John Reaville. Reaville and his wife are buried in Highland Cemetery in Lock Haven. And the money … Well, that may still be buried somewhere, which makes Bald Eagle Township a pretty exciting place.- Lou Bernard is a local writer and can be reached at loulpa @ gmail. com.
