Food Pantry Continues to Help Fill
Local Needs and Tummies
By Shari Everhart
An article first published in the May 13, 2020 issue of
this newspaper, featured the services offered by the Community
Food Pantry located in Gowrie. The pantry continues
to help meet the needs of food insecure people living
within the Southeast Valley School district.
At that time, the pantry was serving a few new families
needing assistance and were looking to reach more. Its
program is set up to accept anyone who has a food need at
any time. Persons don’t have to use the pantry on a regular
basis to utilize the service. There is no process of checking
incomes and if one comes to the pantry for assistance,
their name is not given to anyone else. Those who come
to the pantry need not feel guilty or embarrassed about
needing help to eliminate the worry of providing food for
the table. They are not alone. Many have turned to food
pantries to tide them over week to week, month to month
when cupboards become bare and what to eat becomes a
problem and a matter of survival.
According to the food pantry staff, the residents of
Gowrie and the surrounding communities are so generous
in so many ways supporting and donating to the food pantry.
In addition to goods, monetary contributions are also
very welcome.
First United Church
Continues Food
Pantry Mission
By Shari Everhart
The monthly food collection at the First United
Church of Farnhamville and Somers United Methodist
Church initially began as a mission project of the churches’
confirmation class as a food drive collecting goods for
the Community Food Pantry located in Gowrie. The mission
drive was dubbed “First Fruits”.
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, students of the
class have since been confirmed and the on-going program
has continued. Donation boxes can be found at the east
door of each respective church to collect goods throughout
the ensuing months for delivery to the food pantry the first
part of each month. In addition to the food items given to
the food pantry, monetary contributions are also included.
Items that seem to be most in demand are canned fruit,
canned meats, cereal, peanut butter, hamburger helper
meals, soups, pasta and sauces, baked or chili beans, and
paper products of toilet paper, paper towels and kleenex
and hygiene items such as toothpaste and deodorant.
Money given to the food pantry is used for certificates
given to each family that utilizes the pantry which are in
turn redeemed at the local grocery store to obtain some
fresh and refrigerated items.
As we all deal with these difficult times in which we
live today and the continuing pandemic crisis, helping others
only reinforces sharing our bounty with those in need
is holding to the principle of “doing unto others as you
would have them do unto you.”
The “First Fruits” program endeavors to meet the
needs of those food insecure individuals in the local school
district as people of the congregations continue to so generously
contribute to the food pantry.
Food items most in demand include canned fruit,
canned meats, cereal, peanut butter, hamburger helper
meals, soups, pasta and sauces, baked or chili beans and
paper goods of toilet paper, paper towels and hygiene
items such as toothpaste, deodorant and kleenex. Each
family that comes to the pantry also receives a certificate
to use at the local grocery store for fresh and refrigerated
items. That’s where the cash donations come into play.
Monthly distribution time at the food pantry is the
third Thursday of each month, from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m.
The pantry is located in the community center building on
the north side of Market Street in Gowrie.. If anyone may
know of someone that could possibly use the services of
the pantry are encouraged to have them call (515) 352-
3511 between 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., Monday through
Friday. The emergency number is (515) 352-5202.
Non-perishable food donations can be taken to either
church location in Gowrie or left at the First United
Church in Farnhamville. Monetary contributions can
be mailed to the Community Food Pantry, P.O. Box 294,
Gowrie, Iowa, 50543.
Those who are involved in the food pantry’s operation
issue the reminder that “the food pantry is here to serve
you!”
