Costco’ s charity commitments
During October, there are plenty of ways Costco gives back to the community. The Workplace Giving program enables Costco employees to donate to selected charities, with Costco matching 60 cents for every dollar donated *. Charities that benefit include the Cancer Council, RSPCA and Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief, as well as others focusing on child welfare, education, health and human services. Each warehouse also supports fundraising for its local children’ s hospital throughout the year, including point-of-sale fundraising campaigns when they are held. Members are encouraged to donate when making a purchase. Hospitals covered include Westmead Children’ s Hospital, Canberra Hospitals Foundation, Women’ s and Children’ s Hospital Foundation, The Royal Children’ s Hospital, Mater Foundation Hospital and Perth Children’ s Hospital Foundation.

Considered the world’ s largest folk festival, or Volksfest in the native German, Oktoberfest is a celebration of all things Bavarian that is now enjoyed all over the world. In 1810, the first Oktoberfest celebrated the royal wedding between Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria, later King Ludwig I, and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen in Munich. The five days of festivities involved horse racing, dancing and eating outdoors. The event was such a hit it became an annual occurrence and the focus moved from commemorating the royals to celebrating Bavarian food, drink and culture, most commonly beer and sausages.
