enwes joined hands with Cricket South Africa
(CSA), the Department of Basic Education (DBE)
and our existing partner North West Cricket (NWC)
in pursuit of our shared vision of promoting holistic
development, when they handed over a cricket facility and
mobile kitchen to Rabana Primary School in Ventersdorp on 25
October 2019.
It was a momentous event for the farm school situated near
the region of Klipplaatdrif in the North West province. Cricket
nets were provided as part of the Senwes Spinners Farm School
Project by Senwes and North West Cricket and will unearth and
develop cricketers from disadvantaged communities.
Francois Strydom, CEO of Senwes said: “The Senwes
Spinners Programme has been running for 14 years and is an
innovative and ground-breaking initiative. It is considered to be
one of the greatest opportunities to contribute to our farming
communities. This programme aims to open a world of new
possibilities and opportunities.”
CSA Chief Executive, Thabang Moroe emphasised the
importance of this project: “It’s important to give the children
coming from these vast rural areas an alternative in terms of life
opportunities. The same way that I received a cricket scholar-
ship and today, I stand here as a CEO within cricket.”
The mobile kitchen will be used to serve lunches to the
pupils and staff at the school and assist in the delivery of the
department’s National School Nutrition Programme, which
sees over nine million learners receive a nutritious meal at
school daily. “This initiative is one of the most important within
government as it makes a huge difference to the children,” Dr
Granville Whittle, DBE Acting Director-General said during the
handover.
Rabana Primary School principal, Susan van Jaarsveld,
thanked all the partners involved and said: “We have waited a
long time for such facilities. I have been the principal here for
22 years and we have been a part of the Senwes Spinners project
for the last 13 years and now everything is happening. It means a
lot to us and it will surely uplift the spirits of the children.”
The day was marked as a really special occasion for the school,
Senwes, CSA, the DBE and the National Lottery Commission, as
well as North West Cricket Union, and is only the first of many to
come.
