GOLF
A successful Michaelmas term with an almost unbeaten run and top performances in regional competitions
This year the Sevenoaks golf team had a very prosperous Michaelmas term. The team, led by Kobi Smith, had an almost unbeaten season in our weekly games against other schools, only losing once to Tonbridge School – the eventual winners of the south-east.
The key part of the season was the annual HMC Foursomes competition against other schools in the south-east. The pairs normally featured captain Kobi Smith with Jack Eagle, and Edward Fussell and Xavi Chau, as two Upper Sixth pairs. In the Lower Sixth players, Sanjana Sharma and Edoardo Bonacchi usually played together, with Sanjana going through the group unbeaten, while Tassilo Stelter occasionally stepped in to substitute injured players.
During the Michaelmas term we also participated in the Smarden Bell Championship which features eight of the best golf schools in the south of England. Here, Kobi( pictured) shot level to win the individual category, while overall we finished fourth in what was a very tight team competition. Certainly, those of us back next year will have learned how, in this competition, every shot matters.
The Summer term is always a tricky one for school golf, at Sevenoaks and elsewhere due to public exams. With the Upper Sixth gone and Year 11s often unavailable due to GCSE exams we enjoyed friendlies against schools such as Dulwich College. This also gave us the opportunity to introduce players such as Oscar Day-Duran and Charlie Hopkin from further down the school. A special thanks has to go to our two coaches, Mr Haworth and Mr Danby!
