1ST XI SEASON
With very few of the Upper Sixth available it was a young but enthusiastic side that played each game with commitment , energy and always a lot of fun . Batting highlights included Harry House ’ s unbeaten ton , while useful contributions also came from Kobi Smith , Eddie Johnson and Archie McCulloch . Shot of the season belonged to Olly Hornshaw for his massive six against Eltham . With the ball , Monty Thompson ’ s pace was always threatening but the array of spinners played a key role , with Siddhant Shankar and Harry Soper excelling . In the field , spirits were high even during difficult periods , notably against Eltham where an excellent fightback sadly resulted in a narrow loss .
Throughout the season , the culture in the team was positive and very supportive , as shown in the fantastic win against the Old Sennockians with a stunning five-for from Harry Soper , hands down the standout bowling performance of the season . Useful runs from Harry Scott in this game also helped us get over the line in what could have been a nervous finish .
The MCC game on Founder ’ s Day was a team performance to be proud of , despite a narrow loss . After an impressive bowling performance , the batting showed great character and development in the ability to concentrate for long periods of time , with us batting for 55 overs to take the game right to the wire . contributions with the bat in an excellent season . There were record numbers in Years 11-13 , with 3rd XI matches for the first time in a decade .
The boys ’ 1st XI had a positive season , winning seven and losing four matches . With our Upper Sixth back we had an enjoyable last week of fixtures with wins over Skinners ’, Caterham and Sutton Valence before our Founder ’ s Day showdown with the MCC ( more on this below ).
A huge thank you to all the pupils , staff , umpires , caterers and grounds staff for all their hard work and commitment over the Summer term .
Dave Smith
Excellent bowling performances from Monty Thompson and Sid Shankar saw the MCC declare on 223 for 5 giving us plenty of time to chase the runs down . At 9 for 2 it wasn ’ t looking good but an excellent partnership between Harry Scott and Kobi Smith got us back in the game . Once Kobi fell for 40 , we lost regular wickets but continued to take the game to the MCC bowlers . A strong tenth wicket partnership gave us hope but we fell 20 runs short in a gripping run chase which ebbed and flowed . Harry Scott ’ s excellent innings of 72 made him the MCC player of the match .
