BALI SERVICE PROJECT
The Refugee Partnership Service Group has long been a space for independent initiatives , with some of our members pursuing research publication with respect to their English ( EAL ) teaching , and others exceeding expectations in aiding their students in finding employment . Our initial focus was on providing in-person language tutoring for Ukrainian , Afghan and Syrian refugees in our local community , and through their efforts , we witnessed remarkable progress in their language learning . Many of our students have since found employment , and this led us to extend our support elsewhere , this time to Balinese children at the Anak school of Bali .
Our sessions typically involve interactive discussions , language teaching and , most importantly , cultural exchange . Recognising that textbook English often lacks practical application , we aim to create environments that welcome mutual exchange on a conversational level . Our first sessions coincided
with Galungan , a Balinese ceremony that we had the privilege of learning about . Consequently , we picked up some Balinese too : suksma para teman ! ( congratulations , friends !). Through these efforts , we aim to create spaces whereby language learning is a primary focus , and friendship naturally develops as a result .
I would like to express my gratitude to Mrs Douglas for her steadfast commitment to this initiative , and in that respect , those that came before . She has played an indispensable role as the head of our service group in coordinating our classes and contributing to the success of our teaching programme . Additionally , a special thanks to Mr Tony , the corresponding teacher at the Anak School of Bali . His efforts have been crucial in creating these learning environments through his dedicated collaboration and invaluable partnership with Sevenoaks School !
