CHAMBER MUSIC REVIEW OF THE YEAR
Sevenoaks is renowned for its outstanding chamber music programme and achievements , From concerts to competitions , we had remarkable opportunities to showcase our pieces this year .
From the Michaelmas term , we had weekly rehearsals to prepare for the Pro Corda competition . This year , 24 groups participated , with 15 groups getting through to the semi-finals and two groups advancing to the finals . During the qualifying rounds , we performed our piece in front of the adjudicator , who then gave us a short masterclass . For the finals , we performed at a different school and had the chance to appreciate other competitors ’ performances .
To further prepare each group for the competition , the Music department also organised a chamber music workshop , where we collaborated with professional musicians , including flautist Thomas Hancox , pianist Albert Law and violinist Minn Majoe ( OS 2008 ) ( pictured above ). They offered valuable advice on techniques , enabling us to express the piece better .
During the Lent term we performed in two school concerts , the Chamber Music Platform and the Music at Sevenoaks Orchestral Concert , which helped us to prepare for the final round of the Pro Corda competition . Both experiences were amazing as the acoustics of The Space venues enhanced our sound quality , and we were pleased to learn how much the audience enjoyed the chamber pieces .
I had the privilege of participating in the competition with two entries . In one ensemble , we formed a trio with two flutes and a piano , performing Franz Doppler ’ s Andante et Rondo . The other ensemble group was also a trio but with a flute , a violin and a piano ; we performed Jacques Ibert ’ s Deux Interludes . This year was my first time joining any chamber group and I learned so much from my peers .
I am truly grateful for all the opportunities we had throughout the year and would like to thank all the teachers in the Music department , on behalf of everyone involved in the chamber music programme . Being part of a chamber group has been a valuable experience and we all look forward to more chamber music next year .
