SENNOCKE CONSORT TOUR TO SANTIAGO
As the school year came to a close , a group of Sennocke Consort members , including three organists , began the journey to Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain . Having prepared an extensive programme of European choral works , we were eager to begin performing . In the four days following , we sang in a variety of different beautiful locations , including the monastery of Sobrado , Tui Cathedral , and a local church in Santiago itself , even managing to fit in some busking in the square outside Santiago Cathedral !
One of the most memorable aspects of the trip was the unique opportunity not only to sing in the choir , but to conduct it . While some members of the choir had prior experience of conducting , this was a first for the majority , and it was amazing for us all to be able to grow in confidence as we became more comfortable with conducting over those few days . The trip was a great taste of what it might be like to be a university choral scholar , giving us a chance to practise our sight reading and close harmony singing .
All of us enjoyed singing in such stunning and historic venues , with incredible acoustics – a highlight of which was the first concert at the monastery of Sobrado . Surrounded by high stone walls and domed ceilings , the choir sounded magical . This concert was especially memorable as we were surprised by a huge audience , and ended with a standing ovation and encore requested by an audience member .
Alongside the many musical activities , we also had the chance to explore Santiago and immerse ourselves in its culture . Two nights were spent enjoying delicious tapas , and , on the final day , we climbed to the rooftops of Santiago Cathedral , where we learned about the rich religious and architectural history of the building , accompanied by panoramic views over the city .
Thank you to Mr Dyer for arranging such a wonderful trip , Mrs Dyer and Mr and Mrs Bartleet for accompanying us , and Mrs Duran-Oreiro for lending us her knowledge of the area .
