I think having a bit of musical variation added to the magic of the evening . Also , as this followed the choral concert with a Disney theme , it was great to hear this music interpreted instrumentally , after the choral music many in the audience had heard just a few days before .
In the Lent term , the second half of the programme was given over to the Symphony Orchestra , who played Symphony No 1 in D minor by Christian Sinding . As a member of the orchestra , I was surprised to learn that we were playing a piece by a composer that I had never heard of , but I loved the intensity of the piece and contrast present within the first movement . I later learned that it was a conscious decision by the staff to include this symphony by Sinding , as we tend to gravitate towards composers like Beethoven or Handel ; these are the composers that we have all heard of and it is natural to stay within our comfort zone and choose this repertoire over all else . However , it ’ s important to give lesser-known composers the respect that they deserve , and I am sure that everyone who came to the concert will agree that the piece was beautifully composed and deserves all the respect given to its better-known counterparts .
I would like to finish by thanking every one of the students involved for being so committed , and of course the whole of the Music department , especially Mr Dyer , for putting together such amazing concerts .
