KNITTING CLUB
As knitting has a national moment , the school club welcomes new members .
If we had to describe knitting with one word , it would be ‘ timeless ’. Once you start knitting , you genuinely lose track of time . Despite being a relatively small club , our atmosphere is on an incomparable scale of ‘ low-key-ness ’ as we refer to it . Now , as regular knitters , we often think about times when we were clueless , frustrated and completely lost on how to complete the next row , pattern or stitch . To be honest though , these recollections are what makes knitting so enjoyable . Seeing your progress as a direct result of your effort is an unmatched feeling .
Looking at the biological side of knitting , there are multiple studies that show that knitting helps with anxiety , cognition , memory and even brain lateralisation . However , these weren ’ t the reasons we joined Knitting Club ; being in a sociable , calm , pressure-free environment was much more appealing to us .
There are moments that I think perfectly capture the nature of this club , including knitting with the Johnsons collective , and knitting on the train back to school . Something we are planning to do is a knita-thon . During an upcoming holiday , we plan on knitting for as many hours as it takes to produce 94 metres of knit . The reason the number 94 is significant is because it represents the 940,000 people in the UK with dementia . Knitting is commonly associated with old age and is proven to have a significant effect in decreasing chances of dementia and Alzheimer ’ s disease . We plan on doing this in a public space and livestreaming it , not only so people can witness us knitting , but so that donations can be made at the same time .
As crazy as it sounds , knitting has given us a newfound appreciation for creativity . As students , it is easy to lose touch with creativity when faced with exams and studies . Knitting is a great way to rekindle your creative side amidst your academic journey .
We would like to personally thank Madame Fayaud , the pièce de résistance , both our knitting mentor and French teacher . She is not only welcoming , but also extremely authentic . Her traits attribute to the overall atmosphere of the club – there aren ’ t many teachers like her . She is not only gifted with a natural talent for knitting but also a genuine personality . ‘ Chill vibes ’ follow her everywhere , especially in Knitting Club .
Laissez-faire , chill and pressure-free , Knitting Club is the place to be .
