ARCHERY CLIMBING

An increasingly popular competitive sport

Since its introduction in March 2021 , archery at Sevenoaks has been enjoyed as a Sixth Form sport option . This year , the archery range moved to Solefields for the winter , then to Duke ’ s Meadow for the Summer term , allowing archers to experience shooting in a range of different conditions and settings .
The Sixth Form archery team have been developing their shooting at different distances by working through the 252 award scheme . Here students shoot at progressively greater distances up to 100 yards , aiming to achieve a score of or above 252 over 36 arrows . Ellie Phillips was the first Sevenoaks archer to complete the award scheme , securing her qualifying 100-yard scores shortly before the end of the Summer term .
A team consisting of Amber Holt , Pascal Knowles , Millie Britain and Linh Nguyen convincingly won their inaugural postal fixture against Uppingham School with a scoreline of 1047 to 968 , in spite of Uppingham fielding a far more experienced team . During the Summer term , archery was also enjoyed by 30 Lower and Middle School students during regular after-school sessions .
Next year , we look forward to welcoming new archers , continuing to develop outstanding bowmanship , and competing in further fixtures .

Success at U16 level for a promising young team

We had a fantastic result at the Southern Schools Climbing Competition , with Ruben Tandy and Ruby Thomas both placing first in individual bouldering . We also had success at the Brighton Inter- Schools Competition , with Ruben finishing fourth and Ryan Friis eighth , Ruby fourth and Niamh Harmer seventh .
We then enjoyed the Southern Schools Bouldering Competition where Ruben again earned an impressive first place and Ruby took third . The team of Ruben , Ruby , Niamh , Ryan and Anthony Bristow did well , coming second overall .
Excellence continued at the Independent Schools ’ Climbing Competition where Sevenoaks came first in seven of ten categories : Ryan won the bouldering ; Ruby won the speed , lead climbing and overall combined categories . Our mixed team of Ruby , Ryan and Ruben won both bouldering and speed ; and our girls ’ team of Ruby , Niamh and Charlotte Bloodworth won the bouldering .
The team is mostly Years 8-11 , so potential for future events is strong . Ruben wins the Climber of the Year award , and we all look forward to pushing the standard and winning lots next year !
