RUGBY AND FOOTBALL
The Michaelmas term in rugby was quite tough given the lack of fixtures . But we managed to have a brilliant time while progressing our skills and keeping fit . In the Lent term , we , as students , had more responsibility within the team by leading some sessions and our own warm-up . On Saturdays , we had a World Cup tournament which created some competitive fun and something to look forward to .

I enjoyed the friendly competitiveness and collaboration with my friends in the internal tournaments . It wasn ’ t the same as competitive fixtures , but it was still a really enjoyable experience .
Oli Ebsworth , Year 10
The internal rugby tournaments were very good to improve the handling of the ball . I definitely saw my passing improve . I also think that the atmosphere of friendly competition helped to make new friends .

EMBRACING THE LOCKDOWN SPORTS OFFERING
During the first lockdown in summer 2020 , I , like many others , felt frustrated ; frustrated that everything I ’ d worked hard towards , from important exams to exciting tournaments , had been cancelled . Nonetheless , I quickly learned to seek opportunities , and the cancellation of exams was an excellent opportunity to train more . The fabulous school sports programme , with weekly leader boards and new challenges , gave me the motivation needed to keep training hard . I believe I left the first lockdown stronger than I ’ d entered it .
The third lockdown was definitely tougher to train in , with my sunny runs from the first lockdown replaced by wet , muddy speed sessions , and dark mornings and evenings . Again , all my school , club , and academy training sessions were cancelled , but now in the middle of the lacrosse season . However , visions of team huddles in the middle of the pitch and playing tactically as a team to win a close match motivated me to fit in my training , from morning wall ball to lunchtime runs to evening strength sessions . Most importantly , I knew that staying in contact with my team , and training online together where possible was going to help me go racing back into the season stronger and better , when the time came . I feel very fortunate and thankful that throughout lockdowns , the school has been absolutely amazing in helping me to keep improving through providing extensive programmes , challenges and opportunities for reflection .

The Masked Miler ( see page 92 ) and lockdown PE lessons were very good for my fitness . I don ’ t think I would have gone on the exercise bike every day if I hadn ’ t had the motivation to get on the leader board and challenge myself with my class onscreen . That said , I couldn ’ t wait for lockdown to lift – I really hoped the tennis and cricket season could go ahead and we could play some games !
