and so on . To solidify our ideas , we produced a collaborative project focused on this idea . A popular choice , unsurprisingly , was to make an iMovie , and the comedic elements employed by many groups made for a brilliant viewing session .
For Modern Languages we were given the brief of writing an essay or producing a podcast on a historical event or artefact . This was a great chance for us to learn more about something we did not quite understand and were interested in ; for me this was the Berlin Wall .
The Maths department must be credited for its considerable variety , offering code breaking , IGCSE / Add Maths consolidation , origami , trading , the history of mathematics and Team Maths Challenge competition , to name just a few . The most popular of these was code breaking and the highlight of the course involved an escape room , or rather , for legal reasons , a ‘ break-into ’ room ( it turns out locking 40 children in a room isn ’ t allowed !).
Geography students enjoyed tackling the questions : ‘ How should we handle the recovery of the Sevenoaks high street after the pandemic ?’ and ‘ How can we reduce carbon emissions ?’ They created presentations for the mayor of Sevenoaks , Cllr Dr Merilyn Canet , and there were some brilliant ideas for the town , such as using electric scooters , restricting lorries , creating pedestrian areas and making the Stag theatre more appealing to our age group . Watching these presentations was genuinely inspiring as change seemed possible , even probable , and I felt proud that it would be driven by my peers .
The sport available was a sociable way to balance the academics . From tennis to rugby , hockey to cricket , football to rounders and many other options , there was something for everyone . With our amazing facilities , the school also provided other co-curricular activities such as ceramics , painting , film-making and climbing . Although a thoroughly enjoyable activity , I would not recommend climbing for the fainthearted , such as myself !
The programme not only encapsulated the amateur spirit in trying new things , but it was a brilliant and widely appreciated way to round off the year . The social aspect was , for many , the highlight . The sun shone kindly on our beautiful grassy campus and we took in all the rays we could . The Common Room was a great place to spend time with friends and with table tennis , table football and plenty of card games , there was never a dull moment . Chatting with friends was wonderful , but what perhaps rivalled this were conversations with new people , as we were all in new classes and so were given the social opportunity to get to know more people and form new friendships , a brilliant bonus which I ’ m sure many look forward to next year with the new intake of students .
