PRESENTATION TEXT
Semana Film Festival was conceived as another window for
Brazilian films, at a time when many of them had difficulty
finding exhibition spaces in Rio de Janeiro. Since then a lot
has changed, new venues and possibilities of diffusion have
arisen, but at the same time the Brazilian production has
increased considerably.
In this edition, we have set up our programming from a
universe of nearly a thousand films. There were more than
130 features and 750 short-films submissions, as well as
many others that we had access to, in constant work of
researching.
In this way, we have found that the difficulty of exhibition
remains an issue for many works. It is not our intention
to solve this problem, even because we work with a very
limited programming. This year will have 22 sessions in 7
days of exhibition.
In any case, more than in numbers, we are interested in the
proposed meetings, of the films and filmmakers with their
public, the debates that begin in the theatre and continue on
the streets and pubs of the city. The Semana seeks to closely
monitor the Brazilian audiovisual production, proposing
incisions that evidence the strength and drive of our cinema
in its programming.
At a time when the country and the world are in crisis,
in which coups succeed, in which neoliberalism and
conservatism regain strength and we accompany, terrified,
social and behavioral setbacks, art gains strength as a form
of resistance. The films respond quickly to reality and the
Semana also seeks to be an active part of this process,
through the profile of films we set. Thinking, reflecting,
arguing, provoking, subverting and putting values in
question is becoming more and more urgent.
In the program here presented, it is possible not only to
verify the vitality of our audiovisual production, but also to
think about different ways and possibilities for creation. We
