Prepare a Presentation We all want to do our best, so here are a few tips to help you to control your nerves, and present a positive impression to the audience. Before the presentation:    Be well practised – It is ALWAYS worth running through your presentation a number of times alone and with a volunteer audience. This will help you to check timings and order, and try different ways of making the points, and mean you are less reliant on notes on the day Be well organised – the less that is unknown, the more you are in control. This means knowing your own presentation inside-out, but also being clear about practicalities such as what equipment will be used, how many people will be there, whether you should prepare handouts, etc Plan your outfit – make sure it is something you will feel comfortable in. Ladies, if you have a tendency to flush under pressure, try wearing a high-necked top if appropriate. Gents, if you’re not used to wearing a tie, DON’T – It will simply irritate and distract you! Immediately before the presentation – try one or more of the following:        Arrive in plenty of time – being late will make the nerves worse Close your eyes and breathe deeply – some people find it beneficial to lie down to do this Concentrate on releasing the tension from your body a bit at a time, starting from your feet Listen to music – something that will put you in the right frame of mind (e.g. a rock tune for ‘pumping you up’ or a classical piece for calming you down) Do a few aerobic exercises (such as stretches)– but not so much that you are out of breath and red in the face! Have drink of water – not alcohol or caffeine! Visualise yourself beginning the presentation successfully – top sportsmen do this, as it gets the brain into the habit of thinking positively rather than negatively Power Hour – Prepare a Presentation www.power-hour.co.uk Self Study Workbook Page 19 Copyright Power-Hour 2012
